This large breed comes from Maine, as their name suggests. They are the largest domestic cat breed, and some even speculate they are descendants of Marie Antoinette’s long-haired cats! Check out this link to read more about this theory.
These are particularly large cats. An older coon often weighing between 14-20 pounds and being nearly 30-40 inches long. That’s one large, fluffy kitty!
Due to their breeding, Coons require their teeth to be regularly brushed to lessen the risk of developing periodontal disease. They have also been known to have hip-related issues, that present themselves as they grow older. Click Here to learn more.
Despite a few extra steps to care for them, Maine Coons make for lovely and fairly easily cared for pets. They, while not typically being lap cats, love to be near their owner! It is not uncommon for them to trail behind their caregiver and want to be with them through every step of their day.
